Podcasting has become a dynamic and exciting way to share your voice with the world. As of 2024, there are an estimated 2 million active podcasts with over 48 million episodes available. This incredible growth shows that podcasting is more popular than ever. However, it's not as simple as hitting record and having a conversation. Before you dive in, consider my Three Ps of Podcasting to ensure your podcast's success.
Step 1: Preparation
A successful podcast starts with a clear strategy. Establish your goals and structure your podcast to meet them. Ask yourself what you want to achieve: Are you promoting a product or service? Educating others about your industry? The answers to these questions will guide your podcast’s direction.
Choosing the Right Tech Stack
Having the right technology and equipment is crucial. A high-quality microphone and headphones can significantly impact your podcast's sound quality. While it might be tempting to use your computer's built-in microphone, investing in a stand-alone microphone like the Samson Q2U (budget-friendly) or the Rode Podcaster (high-end) will make a big difference. Clear audio is key, and good headphones are just as important.
Hosting Considerations
Your podcast needs a home. While it can't live on your website, you can link to it there. Most podcast hosting sites offer subscription services, providing stats and insights to help you track your podcast's performance. For beginners, Buzzsprout is user-friendly and quick to set up. If you're planning to host multiple shows, consider the more advanced Transistor.fm.
Step 2: Production
Producing your podcast might seem daunting, but there are plenty of tools to help you along the way.
Assets and Planning
Your podcast will need creative assets, including a logo, theme music, and a social media hashtag. Plan out how often you'll publish episodes and whether you'll have guests on your show. These elements help define your podcast’s identity.
Audio Recording
High-quality audio requires a good recording environment. Find a silent, distraction-free space—like a home office or a studio booth. This setup doesn’t have to be expensive but needs to be quiet.
Audio Editing
Editing software can help you polish your podcast. Programs like GarageBand (already on many Apple computers) or free options like Audacity make editing straightforward. For more advanced features, Zencastr is a great choice.
Video Recording
If you plan to include a video component in your podcast, having the right equipment is key. I recommend using a Logitech Brio 4K webcam for crystal clear video quality. Lighting is equally important to ensure your videos look professional. I use two GVM lights alongside an LED Stage Wash Light Bar – OPPSK 16" 18W Dimmable Wall Washer Lights. These lights are color-changing and come with an app and remote control for easy adjustments. Proper lighting can make a significant difference in your video quality.
Step 3: Promotion
Getting your podcast in front of the right audience is crucial. Your mom might be your biggest fan, but she can't be your only one.
Microsites
Create a landing page or microsite for your podcast. This page should include past episodes, show notes, related blog posts, and social media feeds. Enhance it with calls-to-action, like subscribing to newsletters. Take a cue from Gary Vaynerchuk’s podcast page, which features subscribe buttons and personal notes about his show, The GaryVee Audio Experience.
Blogging
Complement your podcast with a blog to drive traffic to your website and engage with listeners off-mic. A well-executed blog can capture the essence of your show and entice readers to subscribe. Check out Ben Franklin’s World podcast for inspiration.
Social Media
Set up social media profiles for your podcast and use them to share engaging content. Animated videos or quote graphics can capture your audience's attention quickly. Engage with your listeners by following and interacting with them. David Shands' Social Proof Podcast is a great example of effective social media use.
Email Marketing
Build and nurture a database of podcast leads with email marketing. Share behind-the-scenes content, keep them updated on future episodes, and build a relationship with your audience.
As you can see—and hear—there’s a lot that goes into launching a successful podcast. We’re here to help you find the right talent, secure studio space, build an audience, and more. Let’s embark on this podcasting adventure together and get your voice on-air in no time!
