The Path Forward and the Path Behind: A Journey of Purpose and Passion

On the morning of July 25, 2024, I found myself reflecting on the one thing I’ve been most consistent with throughout my life—DJing. I was reminded of this today as I’m preparing for a new role. DJing is something I’ve done since I was 17 years old, and now, at 42, I realize I’ve been at it for 25 years! That’s a quarter of a century spent behind the decks, shaping moments, and creating memories.

What really sparked this reflection was a video I watched recently, where Nipsey Hussle talked about building everything around your core business. It hit me hard because DJing is my core business, my purpose, and yet for a long time, I didn’t fully embrace it as such. I was caught up in the belief that it wasn’t a “real” job. I allowed others to make me feel like it was a side hustle, a passion project, but not something sustainable.

Now I see it differently. Being a DJ is a real job — a profession, and more than that—it’s my calling. It’s been there when other entities I worked for shut down, when life shifted, and when I needed it most. The skills I’ve gained, the lessons I’ve learned—they’ve stayed with me and guided me through tough times. They are the foundation of my future.

Through this reflection, I realize that the path forward is always informed by the lessons we’ve learned along the way. The time has come for me to build around my core business, to establish systems that will allow me to operate at the highest level possible. This is more than just a business goal; it’s a spiritual journey as well.

I’ve committed to praying and planning with consistency. To beginning and ending each day with gratitude and grace. To reflecting on where I’ve been, and using those reflections to guide where I’m headed. As the Akan people of West Africa remind us with the concept of Sankofa—sometimes you have to go back to fetch what you’ve left behind, so you can move forward with wisdom.

So here’s to the path ahead, informed by the path behind. Amen and Ashe.
